Refractive Index is a research and exhibition project that looks at public media displays as light sources, and their effects and reflections on the environments where they are installed. Prepared software test patterns marks the physical effect that public media displays have, by inverting “what the screen sees,” turning away from the display. The work is shown as a collection of research media (photographs, interactive software, printed renders, screen-based video and projection) featuring software-based ‘test-patterns’ in 9 UK city-sites leading up to the 2012 London Olympics.

Twined applications in 1804 and 1809 by Campillo and Sömmering gave us the first long-distance electrical telegraph. These electrochemical contraptions comprised simple on/off switching at the transmission end, coupled to wires immersed in tubes of acid at the receiving station. The tubes were labeled with a unique alpha-numeric character, and hydrogen bubbles resulting from electrolysis of the acid would convey both message and meaning.

Data Calorimetry is an interactive installation comprised of two computers serving up digital documents to one another. These documents detail the natural history of electrical telecommunications development. The data cable connecting the two servers has been spliced, and placed in a tube containing a strong acid. As data is transmitted through this acid, glitches appear on screen, hydrogen bubbles are produced, and a metered temperature rise give a sense of the material energy and power of digital information.

I like to learn and teach.

I have taught at the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU, the Pratt Institute of Art and Design, and the Kolding Design School, and am currently involved with workshops and bits of teaching at the Copenhagen Institute for Interaction Design and others.

I’ve been helping people figure out interesting things they can do with technologies for a long while – mostly when they involve things like museum and exhibitions, or designing for performance, art and music. I’ve worked with ESI Design, the American Museum of Natural History, Argyle Design, the Baryshnikov Art Center and whole bunch of other cultural groups. I do a lot of workshops with other people on more specific topics like electronics, multimedia interaction, and other tools, as well as more conceptual investigations into how these same things have come to shape creativity and other forms of thinking.
